If you are used to seeing mountain laurel in the mountains, you don't expect it down here on the Eastern Shore, do you? When we bought out place, we didn't walk through the entire woods--just the part near the house. I was pleasantly surprised the first time I walked all the way to the point and saw it, and completely blown away the first time I saw it bloom. It is really a special plant!

Hi Barbara,
I can't tell you how much I loved this post. As a long time resident of western Pennsylvania, I enjoyed the splendors of mountain laurel every spring on my own oak covered property and, especially along the highways of northwestern Pennsylvania where my parents grew up. I really miss it each spring here in Chestertown and didn't realize that it was growing in the woods so close by. I need to do more exploring in the wooded areas of Kent County.

Hi Donna!
Every year I'm thrilled that our woods has Mt. Laurel. Here on the Eastern Shore, I never expected it. And how strange is it that we both crossed paths with box turtles yesterday!

Hey Barbara:

Thanks for this wonderful post! In NW Connecticut, the mountain laurel was equally beautiful when I was young and it takes me back to sunny days rambling in the woods. And I saw a box turtle yesterday too! There must be a party!

Thanks,
Donna

Hi Clare! Glad you liked the photos! The wild blue phlox is seeding in everywhere. I started with a couple different colors, and I still have some that are darker purple, others that are lavender, and lots that are white. I can never have enough of it!

Geri
Thanks for visiting! Your best bet is to find a local nursery that specializes in plants for your area. One that offers natives from your area is great. If you have friends or neighbors with nice gardens, ask them where they buy plants. By sticking to local sources, you'll find plants that can tolerate your conditions--I'm assuming sandy soil and probably salt spray. That said, I do like Rare Find, up in central New Jersey. (http://www.rarefindnursery.com/) They have lots of rare plants and you can always find something unusual.

First time checking out your garden pics. Beautiful! I live at the Jersey shore and I am looking for some different plants for my new garden. Where do you find these little gems? Geri
